Big Two’s caste politics on test Few regions will test Mayawati’s Dalit politics and governance record as sternly as Agra, the province the British had unified with Oudh to form United Provinces, now Uttar Pradesh. This is one region where Mayawati has not replaced her incumbent MLAs as she has done elsewhere. To meet the challenge from a resurgent Congress-RLD alliance and the Samajwadi Party, each striving to register its presence in Agra district, she will bank on the way her government has developed Agra city, though such measures have upset some voters as deeply as they have pleased others. These include the soon-to-be-opened Yamuna Expressway that will provide another fast link to Delhi; power reforms with distribution handed over to a private company, Torrent Power Ltd; an upcoming, Rs 1,000-crore, 20km ring road; a leather park; and a leather shoe mandi. Measures born out of Dalit politics have included [...]

Sri Lankan test awaits Dhoni-less India

Sri Lankan test awaits Dhoni-less India Brisbane: India are grappling with a selection dilemma and a prolonged form slump of their batsmen as they go into the crucial tri-series match against Sri Lanka here on Tuesday without the services of their in-form captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni has been handed a one-match ban for slow over-rate in India’s last match against Australia, which they lost by a huge 110 runs at the Gabba here on Sunday. Sachin Tendulkar also appears to be a doubtful starter after he received a blow on his head from a bouncer by Brett Lee. While fielding in the slips, Tendulkar also took a hit on his shin thanks to an edge from Peter Forrest, which kept him out for 25 of Australia’s 50 overs. Barely a couple of points ahead of Sri Lanka in the table but already having played an extra game, India’s best chance [...]

Private Xombie rocket aces NASA landing test

Private Xombie rocket aces NASA landing test A private suborbital rocket passed a landing test for NASA with flying colors this month in a succesful trial run of technology that could help future spacecraft touch down on other planets or moons. On Feb. 2, Masten Space Systems‘ Xombie rocket rose 164 feet (50 meters) off a launch pad in the California desert, moved sideways the same distance, and then landed softly on another pad. The entire flight lasted just 67 seconds. The brief test flight demonstrated a new control system called the Guidance Embedded Navigator Integration Environment (GENIE), which was developed by the nonprofit Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, Mass. NASA’s Flight Opportunities Program sponsored the recent flight, in the hopes that GENIE will enable more ambitious landing demonstrations in the future. “The Draper and Masten team has done a tremendous job pulling together this flight demonstration in a short amount of [...]

UP polls: Slow start to fourth phase; crucial test for Congress

UP polls: Slow start to fourth phase; crucial test for Congress Lucknow:  The fourth phase of Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections today is a crucial test for the Congress. Its prominent candidates like state Congress Committee chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi and Law Minister Salman Khurshid’s wife Louise Khurshid are in the fray. But more importantly, it is a test for the Congress’ minority acceptability as voters from areas with a sizeable Muslim population in the state will give their say today. In the past couple of days, the talking point of campaigning in Uttar Pradesh has been the standoff between Mr Khurshid and the Election Commission over his minority quota remarks made during an election rally. Mr Khurshid’s wife Louise Khurshid is the Congress candidate from Farrukhabad, which goes to polls today. It was in Farrukhabad that the Law Minister made a speech on the issue that plunged him into a [...]

The New Islamists: Tunisia Islamists Test Ideas Decades in the Making

The New Islamists: Tunisia Islamists Test Ideas Decades in the Making Gianni Cipriano for The New York Times Said Ferjani, an Islamist, plotted a coup in Tunisia and fled to Britain to join other Islamists seeking asylum. This article by Anthony Shadid was written before he died on a reporting trip to Syria on Thursday. It is part of a project to assess the aftermath of the Arab Spring. TUNIS — The epiphany of Said Ferjani came after his poor childhood in a pious town in Tunisia, after a religious renaissance a generation ago awakened his intellect, after he plotted a coup and a torturer broke his back, and after he fled to Britain to join other Islamists seeking asylum on a passport he had borrowed from a friend. WATCH: Scary ‘Robo-Mule’ Shows Tricks In Military Test

WATCH: Scary ‘Robo-Mule’ Shows Tricks In Military Test By: InnovationNewsDaily Staff Published: 02/08/2012 12:00 PM EST on InnovationNewsDaily U.S. troops who carry as much as 100 pounds of gear could soon get a robotic mule capable of shouldering their burdens in the toughest terrain. Such a robot recently showed how it can follow a person and navigate around trees and rocks while climbing a hill in its first outdoor test — but it might someday follow spoken commands like a huge, obedient dog. The four-legged, headless “LS3″ robot evolved as the quieter, faster and tougher version of Boston Dynamics’ “BigDog” robot funded by the U.S. military’s DARPA research arm. Upcoming trials will test the robot’s ability to carry 400 pounds on a tough 20-mile trek without any refueling for 24 hours. “If successful, this could provide real value to a squad while addressing the military’s concern for unburdening troops,” said [...]

Waugh says Smith should give up Proteas Test captaincy like Ponting

Waugh says Smith should give up Proteas Test captaincy like Ponting Johannesburg, Feb 8 (ANI): Former Australian captain Steve Waugh believes South African Test captain Graeme Smith should hand over the job to someone else ad follow Ricky Ponting‘s example. He said this would help Smith to concentrate more on his individual. “Graeme [Smith] has been captain for a long time, since he was very young. Maybe it would be good for him to be a player, not so much a captain,” Sports24 quoted Waugh, as saying. “Ricky Ponting has done it and it relieved a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Graeme should think of not being a Test captain and just go there and enjoy his batting,” he added. Waugh believes the Proteas are still not consistent enough at the Test level and should have beaten Australia 2-0 during Australia’s recent tour of South Africa. “South Africa has [...]
