UK royals offered advice on restoration of rare 19th-century ship after suffering palace fire LONDON –  The head of a project to restore a rare 19th-century British ship badly damaged in a 2007 fire says his team won advice from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip. Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, and the queen visited the Cutty Sark tea clipper in Greenwich, southeast London, on Wednesday to officially reopen the vessel to visitors after five years of work following the major blaze. Richard Doughty, director of the Cutty Sark Trust, said the royal family had shared their experiences after suffering a serious fire at Windsor Castle in 1992, which caused extensive damage. Philip had given the Cutty Sark team “moral support and some very practical advice,” and handling repairs following damage to the 143-year-old ship, Doughty said. US ship which carried Laden’s body arrives in Australia Melbourne:  A US supercarrier that took Osama bin Laden’s body out to sea has reached the Western Australian port of Fremantle with 4,700 American sailors on board. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson and the guided missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, deployed since November, have been aiding US forces in the Middle East as well as taking part in an exercise with the Indian Navy. The ship is expected to stay in Fremantle for about two days. The port visit will include crew working with the elderly, visiting sick children and helping at animal refuges. Cruise ship ignores dying castaways in Pacific Ocean

Cruise ship ignores dying castaways in Pacific Ocean RIO HATO (PANAMA): A Panamanian man and his two friends had been drifting for 16 days in an open fishing boat in the Pacific Ocean when they saw a huge white ship. They would be saved, they thought, and Adrian Vasquez began waving a dark red sweater. Birdwatchers with powerful spotting scopes on the promenade deck of the luxury cruise ship Star Princess saw a little boat adrift miles away. They told ship staff about the man desperately waving a red cloth. The cruise ship didn’t stop, and the fishing boat drifted another two weeks before it was found. By then, Vasquez’s two friends had died. “I said, “God will not forgive them,”‘ Vasquez told The Associated Press as he recalled the encounter in the waters off South America. “Today, I still feel rage when I remember.” On Thursday, Princess Cruises, based [...]

Anticipating Space Shuttle’s Arrival, Old Warplanes Ship Out

Anticipating Space Shuttle’s Arrival, Old Warplanes Ship Out Ángel Franco/The New York Times A British Royal Navy fighter-bomber known as a Supermarine Scimitar F1 was among three aircraft lifted by crane over the side of the aircraft carrier Intrepid on Wednesday. On the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Intrepid, sacrifices had to be made. So, on Wednesday morning, three vintage warplanes were trussed up and hoisted over the port side of the ship for a barge ride up the Hudson River to a museum near Schenectady, N.Y. They had to go to make way for the new star attraction: Enterprise, the prototype for the space shuttles that is due to arrive in New York City next week. Enterprise, which the federal government awarded last year to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan, is not scheduled to reach the ship for several weeks, but its move began [...]

Captured ship with Indians not registered in UAE

Captured ship with Indians not registered in UAE Dubai: The ship which was hijacked in the coast of Oman by Somali pirates with 22 hostages, 17 of them Indian, is not registered in the UAE, an official source has said. Royal Grace, the Nigeria-bound vessel, was earlier named Royal Lady. It set sail from Sharjah enroute to Nigeria with a 22-member crew and was hijacked on March 2. It is a Nigeria-flagged ship and neither its owners nor the company which it is leased to are registered in the UAE. Apparently the ship is registered in Nigeria and was carrying several Indians among people of other nationalities, he said on the condition of anonymity. According to reports reaching here, some Pakistanis are also believed to be among the hostage. Several such ships are in similar situation but in this case Indian embassy in Abuja should be handling the matter, he [...]

The unseen Titanic: Photos reveal life aboard doomed ship

The unseen Titanic: Photos reveal life aboard doomed ship The photographs of a single camera enthusiast who traveled aboard the Titanic before its fatal voyage have resurfaced for the 100th anniversary of the sinking, revealing a remarkable glimpse at what life was like for passengers of the ill-fated ship. The Rev. Francis Browne, a Jesuit priest, sailed the first leg of the Titanic’s maiden voyage, between Southampton, England, and Cobh, Ireland — taking a series of black-and-white photos of life onboard the luxury liner. He planned to stay on the ship to New York but was ordered by his superior to return home instead. Browne was lucky. After striking an iceberg on April 15, 1912, the Titanic took 1,500 people with it to its watery grave miles below the surface of the Atlantic. Browne survived, thanks to the demands of his ministry, and so did his photographs, which were rediscovered [...]

Coast Guard sinks Japanese ghost ship adrift since tsunami

Coast Guard sinks Japanese ghost ship adrift since tsunami A U.S. Coast Guard cutter poured cannon fire into a Japanese ghost ship that had been drifting since the last year’s tsunami, sinking the vessel in the Gulf of Alaska and eliminating the hazard it posed to shipping and the coastline. The cutter’s guns tore holes in the 164-foot Ryou-Un Maru on Thursday, ending its long, lonely journey across the Pacific that began when the deadly tsunami set it floating more than a year ago. The crew pummeled the ghost ship with high explosive ammunition, and the derelict Ryou-Un Maru soon burst into flames, and began taking on water, officials said. A huge column of smoke could be seen over the gulf as a Coast Guard C-130 cargo plane, sent to observe the sinking, dropped a buoy to monitor for any possible pollution. The Coast Guard warned mariners to stay away, and aviation [...]

The Next War: A Smaller Navy Ship With Troubles, but President’s Backing

The Next War: A Smaller Navy Ship With Troubles, but President’s Backing MOBILE, Ala. — The Navy’s newest ship is designed to battle Iranian attack boats, clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz, chase down Somali pirates and keep watch on China’s warships. The ones built here even look menacing, like Darth Vader on the sea. “It’s going to scare the hell out of folks,” said Representative Jo Bonner, the Alabama Republican who represents Mobile and is one of the ship’s biggest boosters in Congress. Mr. Bonner acknowledged that the ship has needed a “tweak” here and there — his allusion to one of the most tortured shipbuilding programs in Navy history, a decade-long saga of soaring costs, canceled contracts and blown deadlines. One of the two $ 700 million ships completed so far has had a major leak and crack in its hull, while the other is at sea, [...]

New Zealand charges owners of stricken ship with causing environmental disaster

New Zealand charges owners of stricken ship with causing environmental disaster Handout / Reuters The bow section of the stricken container ship Rena remains above water about 14 nautical miles from Tauranga on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, in this April 4 handout picture. The remains of the ship are stuck on a rock reef six months after it ran aground, in what authorities say is one of the nation’s worst environmental disasters. By Reuters WELLINGTON, New Zealand – The owners of a stricken container ship wrecked on a reef off a popular New Zealand holiday spot have been charged with causing the country’s worst environmental disaster in decades, maritime officials said on Thursday. Daina Shipping, a unit of Greece’s Costamare Inc., has been charged with discharging harmful substances after its 47,230-ton Liberian-flagged ship Rena struck a reef about 12 miles off Tauranga, New Zealand’s biggest export port, in [...]
