Major League Groundskeepers Don’t Mind Getting Dirty By Matthew Orr Talking Dirt: Every year, head groundskeepers from Major League Baseball gather for a three-day summit. Spring training officially begins this week, but the first whispers of a new season actually came early last month at the annual convention of baseball’s groundskeepers, a hardy bunch who can discourse on soil science, analyze weather radar and, when necessary, work ridiculously long hours. As the masters of the grass — there are two laggards, Toronto and Tampa Bay, that still have artificial turf — they gathered in Anaheim, Calif., to talk shop, trade war stories and perform an elaborate good deed that, appropriately, involves finding a local field in need of repair and fixing it up themselves. To some fans, a convention of groundskeepers may sound slightly absurd — Does everyone show up with a rake? Is lawn bowling a group activity (actually, [...]

We don’t support separatists, says Mamata

We don’t support separatists, says Mamata Ahead of her meeting with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) top leaders on Saturday on the Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said she did not support separatists. “We do not want any division (between the hills and the plains). But we want unity among the hills and the plains. I do not support separatists,” Banerjee said while inaugurating the week-long North Bengal Utsav here. GJM has threatened to revive the agitation for Gorkhaland state if GTA was not set up by March 27. Banerjee, accompanied by 12 ministers, held a review meeting with senior officials during the day to take stock of development work in north Bengal. ‘Joe The Plumber’: ‘I Don’t Have To Try’ To Stand Out At CPAC (VIDEO)

‘Joe The Plumber’: ‘I Don’t Have To Try’ To Stand Out At CPAC (VIDEO) WASHINGTON — HuffPost’s Zach Carter and Howard Fineman on Friday spoke with Joseph Wurzelbacher at the 2012 Conservative Political Action Conference. Wurzelbacher is also known as “Joe the Plumber,” a name he was dubbed during the 2008 presidential campaign when he was portrayed as a symbol of middle-class America. CPAC is a major annual event for the conservative movement and on Friday GOP presidential candidates Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich all addressed large crowds. Yet Wurzelbacher told HuffPost he has no problem distinguishing himself. “I don’t have to try,” he said. “My name is Joe Wurzelbacher. I’m going to speak the truth. And I don’t have to remember what I said five years ago or three years from now because it’ll always be the same thing — because it’s the truth.” Wurzelbacher is now [...]

Beyonce flaunts her body after baby? I don’t think so.

Beyonce flaunts her body after baby? I don’t think so. Beyonce, while still pregnant (but not flaunting it). (Evan Agostini – AP) Beyonce made her first public outing this week since giving birth to her first child, Blue, in January. The 30-year-old pop queen was photographed wearing a form-fitting orange dress as she attended an after party for her husband Jay-Z’s Carnegie Hall benefit concert. Considering the extremely high anticipation surrounding the baby’s birth, it’s not surprising that entertainment outlets (including this one) reported on Bey’s reappearance. (What can we say? We missed her!) Most of the commentary centered around how good the singer looks such a short time after giving birth. People magazine declared, “Beyonce flaunted an enviable-as-ever figure late Monday night in New York.” The Examiner, L.A. Times and TooFab.com also used that f-verb. But was Beyonce really flaunting her body? I don’t think so. The word “flaunt” [...]

Decision shortly on Army chief’s age; don’t want him to resign, says Govt

Decision shortly on Army chief’s age; don’t want him to resign, says Govt New Delhi:  The Supreme Court has dismissed the the Army chief’s case against the government. Saying that it has “no scope to interfere”, the court had given General VK Singh’s counsel the option to “withdraw petition or we will pass the order.” General VK Singh wants the government to accept that he was born in 1951; the government says it has to abide by records that show he was born a year earlier. This impacts when he will have to retire, though the General says that’s not what he’s worried about. Here’s your 10-point guide to the story: 1)           While asking the General Singh’s counsel whether they wanted to withdraw the court said,”We want to ensure as a Chief of Army Staff you continue to serve the country as you did for 38 years. This verdict should [...]

Nicklas Backstrom: ‘I don’t know when I will be able to play again’ Posted at 11:06 AM ET, 02/09/2012 “I don’t know when I will be able to play again,” Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom told a Swedish news outlet, “but I hope I will be ready for the playoffs.” (Jonathan Newton – WASHINGTON POST) Nicklas Backstrom hasn’t skated for more than five minutes over the past 34 days, and based on his recent comments to Swedish news outlet Gefle Dagblad, there continues to be no indication as to when the Capitals center may be able to return to the lineup. Backstrom suffered a concussion on Jan. 3 when he was elbowed in the head by then-Calgary forward Rene Bourque and has not played since, missing 15 games and counting. The 24-year-old’s comments to Gefle Dagblad, which was translated by our friends over at Japers’ Rink, do not offer much reason [...]

You don’t deserve more time, says judge to Facebook, Google

You don’t deserve more time, says judge to Facebook, Google New Delhi:  “You don’t deserve more time,” was a Delhi judge’s criticism as he gave internet firms like Google and Facebook 15 more days to remove content described as objectionable hosted on their sites. The civil case being heard today accuses 21 firms including Facebook of allowing “anti-religious” and “anti-social” content that could provoke communal tension.   The same companies are also dealing with a criminal case in another Delhi court, where they are accused of conspiracy and cheating. Top executives of the firms have been summoned to appear in court on March 13. The petitioner in today’s civil case is Mufti Aizaz Arshad Kazmi. He filed his suit in December, days before another Delhi resident Vinay Rai filed the criminal case against the online firms. The Delhi High Court recently warned that India could follow China’s lead and ban [...]

Obama may keep his job even if you don’t

Obama may keep his job even if you don’t By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer The conventional wisdom among many political pundits is that President Barack Obama faces an uphill re-election battle in large part because unemployment seems stuck at historically high levels. Economists who have studied the impact of the job market on past elections beg to disagree. It’s true that no president since Franklin Roosevelt has been elected when the unemployment rate was over 7.2 percent. That was where the jobless rate stood in 1984, when Ronald Reagan won a second term, beating Walter Mondale in a landslide, with 59 percent of the popular vote. The jobless rate stood at 7.4 percent when George H.W. Bush lost his 1992 re-election bid against challenger Bill Clinton; it was at 7.5 percent in November 1980, when Jimmy Carter lost his job to Reagan. If that were the only statistic that mattered, Obama indeed would have his work cut out [...]
