Knicks 104, Mavericks 97: Lin Takes Care of Nowitzki and Mavericks, Putting Knicks Back on Track
Knicks 104, Mavericks 97: Lin Takes Care of Nowitzki and Mavericks, Putting Knicks Back on Track Some moments are more symbolism than substance, enticing in their imagery but lacking in heft. In his brief time as an N.B.A. star, Jeremy Lin has masterfully fused it all, delivering meaningful plays with maximum effect. Lin’s fourth-quarter, pull-up 3-pointer over Dirk Nowitzki was not the most important shot Sunday afternoon, but it was perhaps the most impactful, and it said everything about Lin’s professional growth spurt, his instant stardom and his uncanny comfort under pressure. In a nationally televised game, against the defending N.B.A. champions, Lin rose ever higher, hitting that shot and many more, leading the Knicks to a 104-97 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Lin had 28 points and again set a new high in assists, with 14, as the Knicks registered their most significant win of the season. The Knicks [...]
Republicans Attack Obama’s Health Care Overhaul Over Contentious Issue
Republicans Attack Obama’s Health Care Overhaul Over Contentious Issue BOISE, Idaho — Republican lawmakers in a handful of states are opening another front in the war against President Obama’s health care overhaul, seizing on the hot-button issue of birth control with bills that would allow insurance companies to ignore new federal rules requiring them to cover contraception. Measures introduced recently in Idaho, Missouri and Arizona would go beyond religious nonprofits and expand exemptions to secular insurers or businesses that object to covering contraception, abortion and sterilization. “In its present state, the health care bill is an affront to my religious freedoms,” said Idaho Republican Rep. Carlos Bilbao, who is sponsoring the bill. The ACLU counters, saying such bills discriminate against women. “Each time more entities are allowed to deny contraceptive coverage, the religious beliefs of some are imposed on others, and gender equality is undermined,” said Monica Hopkins, the ACLU’s [...]

Syria’s wounded getting poor care, Aid group says
Syria’s wounded getting poor care, Aid group says PARIS – Many civilians who have been wounded in their country’s violence are unable to get adequate medical treatment — in part because security forces have taken over many public hospitals, an international aid group said Wednesday. Doctors Without Borders released a video in Paris showing interviews with 10 wounded Syrians and five Syrian doctors who have fled the nation. The unidentified witnesses said many wounded are afraid to go to such hospitals for treatment, knowing that Syrian authorities could arrest them and subject them to interrogation or even torture. Instead, some get whatever treatment they can in private clinics or makeshift hospitals in homes. Doctors Without Borders, which is not authorized to work in Syria, said it could not independently confirm the Syrians’ accounts. Doctors Without Borders said it was making the testimony public because of the “recurrence and the gravity” [...]
I’ve slept with 1,000 men so far – I don’t care if people judge me!
I’ve slept with 1,000 men so far – I don’t care if people judge me! Sex addict Crystal Waren After spotting a gorgeous young man on her way to the shops, Crystal Warren couldn’t wait to speak to him on her way home. She’d spent her whole grocery trip daydreaming about where they could sneak off for some illicit sex. Advertisement >> Two hours later, after flirting outrageously with the total stranger and talking her way into his bed, she was back at home, delighted at how her afternoon had panned out. But this sexual encounter wasn’t a one-off moment of passion she planned to gossip about later with friends. In fact, it was pretty unremarkable for Crystal, a sex addict, like the character played by Michael Fassbender in the new movie, Shame. “People don’t usually associate sex addiction with women,” says retail manager Crystal, 42. “We’re normally the ones [...]
Saleh Leaves Yemen for Medical Care in U.S.
Saleh Leaves Yemen for Medical Care in U.S. Khaled Abdullah/Reuters Anti-government protesters celebrated in the streets of Sanaa after the Yemeni president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, left the country on Sunday. Yemen’s outgoing president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, left Yemen on Sunday and will travel to New York for medical treatment, Yemeni and American officials said. A Yemeni government spokesman, Muhammad Albasha, confirmed that Mr. Saleh had left the country but provided no further details. A high-ranking official said that Mr. Saleh was to stop first in the neighboring country of Oman, and then continue to the United States, where he is expected to arrive by Wednesday. The Dubai-based television network al Arabiya reported Sunday evening that Mr. Saleh had landed in Oman. The Yemeni official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press, said that Mr. Saleh was reluctant to travel, but required [...]
California Has A World Class State Health Care System
California Has A World Class State Health Care System SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Jerry Brown has likened it to the “Sword of Damocles,” the sense of foreboding and uncertainty that has hung over California government since the federal courts assumed control over the state’s massive prison medical operations. Most of the prison system’s core functions, from the care of mentally ill inmates to housing juvenile offenders, have been under the authority of federal and state courts for years. But the state appears to be emerging from more than a decade of lawsuits after a federal judge said Tuesday he is preparing to end court oversight of inmate medical care. That has the potential to end a long-running battle between the state and federal courts that led to a U.S. Supreme Court challenge and a revamping of the nation’s largest state prison system. Reforming that part of prison operations has cost [...]
Day Care Centers Adapt to Round-the-Clock Demands
Day Care Centers Adapt to Round-the-Clock Demands ELYRIA, Ohio — Dinner (chicken and mashed potatoes) was long over, teeth were brushed, and a rousing game of Monopoly had come to a close. George Clooney: I Don’t Care About Awards
George Clooney: I Don’t Care About Awards Whether it’s humility, brutal honesty or a clever bit of reverse psychology, George Clooney wants one thing to be known this awards season: he doesn’t care about awards. “I am a fan of movies. And so my job is to try to make films that last longer than an opening weekend,” the writer/director/actor said told Brian Williams on “Rock Center” on Monday night. “And then if someone’s nice to you at the end of the year– and they’ve been nice and they’ve been mean — my job is to try to make films that I think are entertaining.” The words come ahead of Sunday’s Golden Globes, where Clooney figures to have a big night. He’s considered the front runner in the race for Best Actor in a Drama at this Sunday’s Golden Globes for his turn in “The Descendants,” and is nominated for [...]
Child care cuts force hard choices on parents
Child care cuts force hard choices on parents OXNARD, Calif. — Sarah Comito rolls out of bed before dawn most days and slips quietly out of her house. Before her rambunctious toddler wakes up, she heads off to work as a waitress in an upscale weight-loss resort in Malibu. The hour-long commute is exhausting, but the 33-year-old is thankful to make the trip when she remembers where she and her husband were four years ago: living in a tent in a nearby river bottom, strung out on methamphetamine. Now Comito fears the progress they have made since then could be lost as California cuts her from a vital child care assistance program, more than doubling the cost of her son’s day care to $ 600 a month. On a $ 10 hourly wage, she said she’d be better off quitting her job and staying home with her son while her husband [...]
