Overseas remittances to India at record $ 63.6bn in 2011: World Bank
Overseas remittances to India at record $ 63.6bn in 2011: World Bank Mumbai: Non-resident Indians (NRIs) have sent $ 63.6bn to India through remittances. Overseas Indians have sent more money than ever before. According to the World Bank, the increase in value of remittances is also due to a sharp fall in 2011 in the value of the rupee. In 2010, India received $ 54bn in remittances. This is the highest amount of money sent by overseas nationals to any country, according to the World Bank data. India has been the largest recipient of remittances since 2008 when it surpassed China. China received $ 62.5bn in overseas remittances in 2011. An overseas remittance is the money sent back to families by migrant workers. Indians living in US, Europe and the Middle East sent money to their families in India. Same holds true for China, Philippines, Mexico, Pakistan and others. Source: [...]

Spurred by 2011 loss, Heat set for 2nd title shot
Spurred by 2011 loss, Heat set for 2nd title shot MIAMI – Chris Bosh recently peered down the hallway that links the Miami Heat locker room and the team’s home court. Though nearly a year has passed, he still feels the pain. It’s what the Heat call “Championship Alley,” the photo-covered walls paying tribute to the NBA championship run in 2006. For Bosh, it has a totally different meaning. It’s the place where the sting of losing the finals a year ago made him drop to his knees in anguish, a moment captured for the world to see by television cameras he didn’t know were there. “I want it to be different this time,” Heat guard Dwyane Wade said. “I want these guys to feel what they see every day in this arena.” What they see — hundreds of photos of Miami’s title celebrations — represents what this team is [...]

Motorola CEO pay package rose to $47 million in 2011
Motorola CEO pay package rose to million in 2011 NEW YORK (Reuters) – Sanjay Jha, the chief executive to Motorola Mobility, was awarded a total compensation package of about $ 47 million in 2011, almost four times his 2010 pay, according to a regulatory filing. The cellphone maker, which agreed to be bought by Google Inc for $ 12.5 billion, said on Friday that the rise was due to the successful splitting of Motorola into two companies last year to form Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. Jha’s pay package, including option awards, increased from about $ 13 million in 2010, the company said in its proxy filing on Friday. Motorola said it still expects the Google deal to close in the first half of 2012 even though the Chinese government last month extended its review of the deal, which has been approved by U.S. and European regulators. Motorola Mobility said [...]

Japan Fears 2011 Crises Speed Manufacturing Decline
Japan Fears 2011 Crises Speed Manufacturing Decline Shiho Fukada for The New York Times A casting factory in Higashiosaka, Japan, a city feeling an economic pinch as goods are made more cheaply elsewhere. AMAGASAKI, Japan — A few years ago, the densely built-up coastal region around this port was called Panel Bay because of its concentration of factories making the sophisticated flat-panel screens that were symbols of Japan’s manufacturing prowess. But now the area has become a grim symbol of its industrial decline. In recent months, many of those plants have been closed or partially sold off, as the once seemingly invincible electronics industry has lost out to Chinese and South Korean challengers. Panasonic alone shut down two of its three factories here in March while Sharp, desperate to cover losses from its $ 10 billion flat-panel plant in nearby Sakai, accepted a bailout from a Taiwanese technology company — [...]

Obama’s 2011 Federal Tax Bill: $162,000
Obama’s 2011 Federal Tax Bill: 2,000 By JARED A. FAVOLE WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, paid $ 162,000 in federal income taxes in 2011 on $ 845,000 in total income, according to tax returns released just ahead of the national income-tax-filing deadline. The president’s effective tax rate was 19%, compared with an effective tax rate of 14% for 2010 for the probable Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney. The campaign hasn’t released Mr. Romney’s 2011 tax return. The Obamas’ income dropped in 2011 from 2010, mostly due to declining sales of the president’s books. The family paid $ 453,770 in federal income taxes in 2010 on $ 1.8 million in income. The president’s tax return comes as a debate over taxes and the wealthy has become the focal point of the campaign. Mr. Obama has spent much of the last week pushing for a minimum 30% tax on those [...]
Obama paid 20.5 percent tax rate in 2011, White House says
Obama paid 20.5 percent tax rate in 2011, White House says By Andy Sullivan WASHINGTON | Fri Apr 13, 2012 11:09am EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle paid an effective federal tax rate of 20.5 percent on income of $ 789,674 in 2011, the White House said on Friday amid a debate over tax burdens that is likely to shape the November presidential election. Obama and his fellow Democrats have accused likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney of backing policies that would shift the burden from wealthy taxpayers to the less affluent. Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have spent much of the week promoting a minimum 30 percent rate for millionaires, known as the “Buffett Rule,” after billionaire financier Warren Buffett, who famously noted that he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. Romney, who is worth up to $ 250 million, paid [...]
