Va. lawmakers scale back controversial abortion bill
Va. lawmakers scale back controversial abortion bill Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says he wants amendments to an ultrasound-before-abortion bill. By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services Updated at 5 p.m. ET: RICHMOND, Va. — Shortly after Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell announced his opposition a Republican bill requiring vaginal probes of women seeking abortions, the state House on Wednesday approved a substitute version dropping that condition. The House of Delegates voted 65-32 for the watered-down version. Under the substitute, women would still be required to have an ultrasound before an abortion to determine the gestational age, but women subject to a transvaginal procedure would be able to decline, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. That likely dooms the measure. The amended bill now returns to the Senate where its sponsor, Sen. Jill Vogel, said she will strike the legislation. The House action came moments after McDonnell — [...]

Amine El Khalifi, 29 and an illegal immigrant, was arrested last week and charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against U.S. government property, intending to detonate a bomb and to shoot people. He was arrested just blocks from the Capitol and had been the subject of a lengthy undercover investigation by the FBI who said the public was never in danger because he was monitored and only given weapons that were inoperable. PHOTOS: Paula Abdul Says ‘Hasta La Vista’ To The Valley Singer and ex-”X Factor” judge Paula Abdul pretty much straight-up now told us that her Sherman Oaks house was coming on the market. She did what a lot of homeowners do just before they list their properties for sale: She held a garage sale. And while we can’t report on how much she took in at the estate sale — a portion of which went to several charities — we can tell you that she just listed her 4,679-square-foot Mediterranean at $ 1.9 million. Mr. Big Meanie Simon Cowell booted Abdul from her judge’s chair on the American version of “The X Factor” even though the two worked together on “American Idol” for eight seasons. While a replacement hasn’t yet been named, Paris Hilton’s name has been bandied as a contender. Trying to replace Ms. Nice with Ms. Naughty perhaps? [...]
