Broad becomes seventh player ever to claim five wickets and score century at Lord’s

Broad becomes seventh player ever to claim five wickets and score century at Lord’s London, May 18(ANI): Stuart Broad became only the seventh player in history to both take five wickets in a Test innings at Lord’s and score a Test century at the ground after he ended the first day with figures of six for 72 against the West Indies on Thursday. Broad’s best batting knock of 169 in a Test match against Pakistan was also achieved at Lord’s two years ago. He is the fifth English player to get his name on both Lord’s batting and bowling honours boards, following in the paths of Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff. Broad said it was a huge honour for him to follow in the footsteps of Botham and Flintoff, but claiming nine wickets on the first day was much more important. “To follow Fred (Flintoff) and Beefy (Botham) in the [...]

Nationals fall short against Pirates; get ready for Orioles

Nationals fall short against Pirates; get ready for Orioles Perhaps it was a misplaced sense of nostalgia that led the Washington Nationals to conjure up an uninspired loss on the eve of their interleague showdown with the rival Baltimore Orioles. Throughout their brief history in the District, the Nationals have typically either been mired in a losing streak as the twice-yearly Battle of the Beltways rolled around, or about to start one. Things are surely different this year — in Washington and, for that matter, Baltimore — but if all the evidence you had was the Nationals’ 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night at Nationals Park, you wouldn’t know what is at stake this weekend. No-hit for five innings by Pirates right-hander James McDonald, shaken down for two more homers by certified Nat-killer Andrew McCutchen and witnesses to Jordan Zimmermann’s first non-quality start of the season, the [...]

Cricket: Broad salutes Shiv as he eyes seventh heaven

Cricket: Broad salutes Shiv as he eyes seventh heaven Stuart Broad urged England to learn from the example of West Indies star Shivnarine Chanderpaul after the two men dominated the opening day’s play in the first Test at Lord’s here on Thursday. Fast bowling all-rounder Broad took six for 72 as West Indies closed on a total of 243 for nine built upon 87 not out from Chanderpaul, officially the world’s best Test batsman. Broad’s return meant he became only the seventh player in history to both take five wickets in a Test innings at Lord’s and score a Test century at the ground — his Test-best knock of 169 against Pakistan was achieved at ‘the home of cricket’ two years ago. Now Broad, whose current Test-best bowling innings return of six for 46 came at his Nottinghamshire home ground of Trent Bridge last year, could take seven wickets for [...]

1st Test: Chanderpaul defiant despite Broad sweep

1st Test: Chanderpaul defiant despite Broad sweep Lord’s: That Shivnarine Chanderpaul values his wicket like few others is not a matter for debate. His team-mate Darren Bravo felt it, the umpire Marius Erasmus felt it and, most painfully of all, the England bowlers felt it. All three found at the start of an international summer that getting him to leave the crease is no easy matter. Scorecard More than 18 years since he made his Test debut, Chanderpaul is ranked the No. 1 Test batsman in the world, which is proof enough that, at 37, his appetite for batting has not diminished. He finished the opening day of the first Test unbeaten on 87 from 175 balls, with his average against England in England climbing beyond 69. That England could claim nevertheless to have got the job done was down to the competitive zeal of Stuart Broad, who became stronger as [...]
