Mainland Chinese Flock to Hong Kong to Have Babies HONG KONG — For years, Hong Kongers have nursed complaints about the growing parade of visitors to their city from mainland China. The mainlanders spit, litter, jaywalk and cut in line, the locals grouse; they talk too loudly, eat on the subway and otherwise flout Hong Kong’s more refined standards of public behavior. Those are quibbles, though, compared with the uproar over the latest mainland invasion: pregnant women flocking here to give birth. The appeal of Hong Kong, a former British colony that is now a semiautonomous Chinese region, is understandable. Medical care here is far superior to what is found in most of China. Chinese children born here automatically receive the right to permanent residency in Hong Kong, entitling them to 12 years of free education and other benefits that are not available to mainlanders, including visa-free travel to many [...]

Colonoscopy Prevents Death, a Study Affirms

Colonoscopy Prevents Death, a Study Affirms A new study provides what independent researchers call the best evidence yet that colonoscopy — perhaps the most unloved cancer screening test — prevents deaths. Although many people have assumed colonoscopy must save lives because it is so often recommended, strong evidence has been lacking until now. In patients tracked for as long as 20 years, the death rate from colorectal cancer was cut by 53 percent in those who had the test and whose doctors removed precancerous growths, known as adenomatous polyps, researchers reported on Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine. The test examines the inside of the intestine with a camera-tipped tube. “For any cancer screening test, reduction of cancer-related mortality is the holy grail,” said Dr. Gina Vaccaro, a gastrointestinal oncologist at the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health and Science University who was not involved in the research. “This study [...]

WATCH: Is This The World’s Biggest Rope Swing?

WATCH: Is This The World’s Biggest Rope Swing? If heights aren’t your thing, than this epic freefall YouTube video is probably not for you. Devin Graham has created what he calls the world’s largest rope swing, which boasts a whopping 130 foot drop, the Sun reports. Shot over two days in Bootlegger Canyon, Moab Utah, the video features Graham’s friends flying through the air, secured only by rock climbing ropes. Some of them don’t even wear a helmet. After investing a couple of hours in the set up of the ropes, the swingers swoop under the Corona Arch, to which the swing is connected by five different anchors. Since the video hit the web last Wednesday, more than 5 million people have watched it. In addition, Graham produced a behind the scenes video. Of course, Graham doesn’t just take frightfully amazing shots from dangerous heights. According to CBS, other videos [...]

Need to work on our finishing: Nobbs

Need to work on our finishing: Nobbs New Delhi: India hockey coach Michael Nobbs was quite satisfied with his team`s 3-2 victory over Canada in the London Olympics qualifiers but said the his boys need to work more on their finishing. “We played pretty well considering the opposition. Statistically, we penetrated into rival defence about 30 to 40 times in comparision to Canada who just had two shots at the goal and earned two penalty corners. So, I am personally happy. We were rushing through a little and didn`t finish as well we wanted. We had our chances and could have sealed the match much earlier,” he said. With today`s win, India are virtually in the finals and Nobbs said he would employ a different strategy. “It doesn`t matter who we meet in the final, we have to win to be in London and we will try to employ a [...]

Virginia Commonwealth May Need Magic for a Final Four Sequel

Virginia Commonwealth May Need Magic for a Final Four Sequel RICHMOND, Va. — The afterglow from Virginia Commonwealth’s stunning Final Four run last spring spread beyond the basketball court. The Rams’ coach, Shaka Smart, threw out the first pitch at a Chicago Cubs game, attended the White House correspondents’ dinner and joined five of his players at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles. All summer, forward Bradford Burgess smiled for pictures and signed autographs after attending services at Spring Creek Baptist Church in Midlothian, Va. And V.C.U.’s athletic director, Norwood Teague, said that during business trips, he no longer had to explain the university’s acronym. “So many people have told me our team was the best thing that’s ever happened to the city of Richmond,” Smart said. “They said they’d remember it forever.” But Smart’s greatest challenge this season was making his current team forget. At a meeting early in [...]

GOP Lawmaker Seeks To Make Birth Control ‘Obsolete And Outdated’

GOP Lawmaker Seeks To Make Birth Control ‘Obsolete And Outdated’ A Republican lawmaker in New Hampshire has proposed repealing the state’s requirement to provide insurance coverage for birth control by attaching the measure to a bill aimed to repeal “obsolete and outdated” laws. State Rep. Andrew Manuse (R-Derry) has proposed the amendment to end the contraception law to a piece of routine legislation clearing older laws off the books, the Concord Monitor reports. Manuse’s amendment, first proposed Tuesday as the routine legislation was being heard by a legislative committee, would exclude both religious organizations, along with private companies that have religious objections, from the requirement to provide birth control. The Monitor reports: Current state law, passed in 1999 with bipartisan support and no objection from the Diocese of Manchester, requires insurance companies to cover contraceptive care. Employers, including churches, can bypass the requirement by self-insuring, and that is what the [...]

Dirty surgical tools a problem in the OR

Dirty surgical tools a problem in the OR A new report suggests doctors across the country are using surgical tools contaminated with blood and other debris and because the FDA doesn’t require hospitals to report it, many incidents are unknown. NBC’s chief medical editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman reports. By Stacey Naggiar and Kerri ZimmerNBC News When John Harrison checked into a Texas hospital in 2009 for rotator cuff surgery, he thought that after a six week recovery period, he’d be as good as new.  But two weeks after the operation, the 63 year-old was experiencing severe discomfort and swelling in his shoulder and knew something was terribly wrong. During an emergency visit to the hospital, doctors told him that he had been infected during surgery with a deadly bacteria called P. aeruginosa. And Harrison wasn’t the only one — six other patients who had undergone surgery at the same hospital [...]
